The Body Scan in an MBCT Group
Sometimes it is helpful to make sense of a practice by listening to the experiences of other group members. We can do this by watching a class we led in person where participants speak about their experiences of doing their first Body Scan, just as we have done. We can listen as the instructor inquires into the experiences that participants had and what specifically they noticed. You may notice some of the same experiences you had reflected in what they say.

The River of Mental States
The Body Scan can be vague in terms of telling you what should happen. Because there is no particular goal or place to get to, you might even say that it is designed to generate lots of reactions.
When we attend to our bodies in this way, we are all engaging in the same practice but the experience is different for each of us, and in fact is different for each one of us each time we do this practice.
Please know that there is no right or wrong way to feel as you do the Body Scan. It is a matter of seeing what you find when you carry your attention from region to region. What if the mind was a river full of different mental states? Can you allow yourself to simply observe the movement that is already there, exploring the items that stand out, resting in the flow?
